The renowned analog sound of the Solid State Logic 9000 series desks has been digitally recreated by Brainworx and is now accessible through Plugin Boutique with a significant discount. Until August 31, 2026, the bx_console SSL 9000 J plugin is available at a 78% price reduction, offering producers and engineers a chance to work with a highly respected channel strip emulation inside their digital audio workstations (DAWs).

This plugin emulates the SSL 9000 J console, a model celebrated for its clarity, extended low-end response, and enhanced headroom, which set new standards in mixing quality during the 1990s and following decades. The original console design was favored by many prominent producers and artists across genres including pop, hip hop, and R&B, contributing to landmark recordings by figures such as Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Rihanna, and Coldplay.

Developed in close partnership with the SSL engineering team, the bx_console SSL 9000 J plugin is based on original schematics to faithfully replicate the analog circuitry. Additional refinement came from collaboration with acclaimed mixer Michael Brauer, whose extensive use of the SSL 9000 J on numerous gold- and platinum-certified projects influenced the plugin’s tonal accuracy and functional responsiveness.

Beyond replicating the hardware’s sonic character, the digital plugin incorporates unique features exclusive to the software environment. Users benefit from adjustable Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) controls, a compressor mix parameter for parallel compression techniques, and a V-Gain control designed to authentically emulate the analog signal path adjustments found on the original console. These enhancements provide expanded creative flexibility while maintaining the signature sound of the SSL 9000 J.

The plugin also includes a comprehensive set of presets developed with input from Michael Brauer and other expert mixers. These presets serve as effective starting points, enabling users to apply the SSL 9000 J’s distinct qualities to a variety of mixing scenarios and genres.

Critical reception of the bx_console SSL 9000 J has been largely favorable. Reviewers highlight its powerful, clean, yet warm analog tone, with particular praise for the extended bass response and smooth high-frequency clarity. The TMT (Tolerance Modeling Technology) stereo width feature is noted as a valuable tool for enhancing the spatial dimension of mixes.

While widely regarded as an essential tool for contemporary mixing workflows, especially for drums and beats in hip hop and pop music, some users have observed a learning curve for newcomers. Additional considerations include managing cumulative gain noise when processing multiple tracks and navigating the plugin’s preset interface, which some find less intuitive.

The availability of this plugin at a steep discount provides an accessible entry point for engineers seeking to integrate the SSL 9000 J’s esteemed sound into their productions. Given the console’s historical importance and enduring influence on modern music, the bx_console SSL 9000 J plugin stands as a valuable asset for both professional and aspiring mixers.
