Ed Sheeran is praised as a 'rare combination of genius and integrity' by Snow Patrol's Johnny McDaid as he speaks out in support of his 'best friend and brother' amid Macklemore tour row

In the midst of growing controversy surrounding Ed Sheeran's ongoing US Loop Tour, Snow Patrol's Johnny McDaid has publicly expressed strong support for the singer-songwriter, highlighting the profound respect and close bond they share. McDaid, a long-time collaborator and co-writer of some of Sheeran's biggest hits, offered a rare glimpse into Sheeran's character during the 2026 BMI London Awards, where McDaid received the BMI President's Award.

Reflecting on their friendship that began when Sheeran was just 20, McDaid described their relationship as more than friendship, likening it to brotherhood. McDaid credited Sheeran not only with musical genius but also with possessing a deep sense of integrity, qualities he suggested are seldom found together in the music industry. Their creative partnership has yielded chart-topping songs including "Shape of You," "Photograph," "Galway Girl," "Bad Habits," and "Shivers."

This public commendation comes at a turbulent time for Sheeran, who has faced significant backlash following the removal of rapper Macklemore from his tour lineup. Macklemore was dropped after making pro-Palestinian remarks during Sheeran’s New Jersey concerts, a decision that sparked solidarity withdrawals by other opening acts and the backing band, escalating tensions around the tour.

The tour change originated after Robert Kraft, owner of Gillette Stadium where one of the concerts was scheduled, cited concerns about hate speech in Macklemore's statements and banned him from performing at the venue. This led to a cascade of artists distancing themselves from the tour in support of Macklemore and the Palestinian cause.

Sheeran's response to the controversy has been notably emotional and reflective. Breaking his usual stance of avoiding political commentary in his performances, Sheeran addressed the situation directly to his audience during a Philadelphia show. He expressed personal turmoil and sadness over the conflict, acknowledging the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and condemning the violence while emphasizing the complexity and pain involved.

Despite the backlash and the departure of supporting acts, Sheeran conveyed gratitude toward the fans who continued to attend his concerts, underscoring the importance of unity and love through music. He admitted the experience had been challenging both professionally and personally, revealing moments of doubt about his future as an artist.

McDaid’s remarks about Sheeran’s integrity and creative talent provide a contrasting narrative to the divisive public discourse surrounding the tour. His testimony highlights the artist's commitment to his craft and personal values amidst external pressures and controversies.

While the political dimensions of the tour dispute have sparked intense debate, McDaid’s focus remains on the enduring personal and professional relationship with Sheeran, emphasizing the rare combination of artistic brilliance and moral conviction he believes Sheeran embodies.

As the Loop Tour continues, the situation reflects broader challenges for artists navigating the intersection of music, personal beliefs, and public expectations in a highly polarized environment. Details on how the tour will proceed remain limited, but the solidarity among certain collaborators and the unwavering fan support suggest Sheeran remains determined to move forward despite the obstacles.
