Upbeat singer Sam Ryder's a perfect antidote to all those whinging celebs: CHRISTOPHER STEVENS reviews episode two of Celebrity Race Across The World

The latest installment of Celebrity Race Across The World, set against the challenging backdrop of Borneo, has highlighted a refreshing departure from the typical celebrity narratives often saturated with mental health struggles. Among the participants, singer Sam Ryder emerged as a beacon of positivity, navigating the demanding journey with an unyielding upbeat outlook.

Sam Ryder, who gained significant recognition following his acclaimed 2022 Eurovision performance with "Space Man," demonstrated remarkable resilience throughout the second episode of the series. Despite facing the kind of hardships that might discourage many—navigating unfamiliar cities with names difficult to pronounce, enduring intense heat, physical exhaustion, and financial constraints—Ryder maintained an optimistic perspective that resonated powerfully on screen.

Accompanied by his tour manager and close friend Kaz, Ryder’s approach to adversity was characterized by a conscious choice to seek positivity even amid setbacks such as transportation delays and breakdowns. His attitude contrasts sharply with the often dominant depiction of celebrities overwhelmed by anxiety or attributing their difficulties to mental health diagnoses such as ADHD or autism, a trend noted by observers and critics alike.

Ryder’s journey on the show underscores the value of perseverance in the face of prolonged challenges. His path to musical success was marked by years of persistent effort and rejection before a fortuitous endorsement from superstar Justin Bieber propelled his career forward. This backstory adds depth to Ryder’s portrayal, illustrating that his optimism is grounded in experience rather than naïveté.

Other celebrities on the show, including football presenter Jeff Stelling and his son Matt, displayed a more subdued demeanor during their taxing 14-hour taxi journey through Borneo’s rugged terrain. Their subdued spirits stood in stark contrast to Ryder’s infectious enthusiasm. Moments of levity, such as their brief stint cleaning a buffalo stable, were among the rare occasions when smiles appeared, underscoring the grueling nature of the challenge.

The episode also featured singer Ella Eyre and her companion Nana engaging in orangutan spotting, alongside Princess Andre, daughter of Katie Price, who found delight in interacting with the local feline population. These moments offered glimpses of connection with the environment and wildlife, adding texture to the contestants’ experiences.

Notably, the presence of stray cats throughout Borneo became a recurring visual element in the series, suggesting a unique aspect of the locale’s street life compared to other regions where street dogs are more common. This subtle detail provided an intriguing backdrop to the celebrities’ journey.

The program’s current season situates itself within a broader media context, coinciding with commemorations of British television’s 90th anniversary by BBC4. This milestone highlights the evolution of broadcast content, from early historical documentaries to contemporary reality competitions that explore human endurance and character.

In summary, Celebrity Race Across The World's recent episode distinguished itself by showcasing Sam Ryder’s inspiring commitment to positivity amidst adversity. His demeanor offers a counter-narrative to the often prevalent depiction of celebrity vulnerability, suggesting that resilience and optimism remain vital components of personal and professional success. The series continues to provide both entertainment and subtle commentary on the ways public figures navigate challenges beyond their usual domains.
