How Texas high jumper Osawese Agbonkonkon wants to clear the bar as a sci-fi author

Osawese Agbonkonkon embodies a rare blend of athletic and literary ambition as he navigates his collegiate high jump career at the University of Texas while simultaneously promoting his debut science fiction novel. His journey from a reluctant high school track participant to an NCAA Division I competitor intertwines closely with a passion for storytelling that dates back to his childhood.

Initially drawn to writing after a significant early experience in fifth grade, Agbonkonkon developed a fascination with narrative worlds inspired by popular franchises such as Marvel’s Captain America, James Bond, and Fast & Furious. This early interest matured into the concept for his sci-fi series, which centers on a group of enhanced humans known as The Psychics.

Agbonkonkon’s athletic path began somewhat serendipitously. Despite initial reluctance—having once declined to join his high school track team after being spotted dunking a basketball—persistent encouragement from his coach led him to embrace the high jump. His natural aptitude quickly became evident, allowing him to surpass varsity competitors as a junior varsity athlete. This pivotal decision not only shaped his athletic career but also elevated his profile, providing a platform that complements his literary pursuits.

In collegiate competition, Agbonkonkon has made notable appearances at prestigious events including the NCAA Division I outdoor track championships, along with SEC and Pac-12 meets. Although his most recent season was hampered by injury, resulting in a 16th-place finish at nationals, he remains optimistic about a healthy comeback and professional aspirations in high jumping.

Parallel to his athletic commitments, Agbonkonkon has been methodically building his authorial presence. He self-published Psychic Suit in 2024, a science fiction thriller that serves as the cornerstone for an expanding universe he intends to develop into a multimedia franchise. His strategic approach includes preparing a television series bible, which is actively being pitched to Hollywood studios, signaling ambitions beyond the printed page.

Balancing the demands of student-athlete life with book promotion and creative planning is no small feat. Agbonkonkon attributes his ability to manage these diverse roles to a strong support network consisting of family, coaches, and athletic staff. He also embraces a mindset of possibility and determination, refusing to prioritize one passion over the other.

Looking ahead, Agbonkonkon aims to release the second installment of his Psychic Suit series by the end of 2026. Until then, he continues refining his craft, expanding the series’ scope, and enhancing his athletic performance. This dual trajectory illustrates a commitment to both personal development and professional advancement in fields that rarely intersect.

Agbonkonkon’s story highlights the unpredictable ways that opportunity and persistence can intersect. His initial hesitation to join track and field evolved into a defining chapter of his life, underscoring how early influences and choices can redirect potential. Now, as he pursues parallel careers in sport and speculative fiction, he exemplifies the possibility of crafting a unique identity across multiple disciplines.

While details about the broader reception of his novel and television project remain limited, the trajectory outlined by Agbonkonkon suggests a calculated and ambitious pursuit of success. His experience underscores how college athletes can leverage their visibility and discipline to cultivate creative ventures, expanding the conventional boundaries of their personas.

In sum, Osawese Agbonkonkon represents a multifaceted talent whose ambitions span the physical and imaginative realms. His evolving narrative serves as an illustration of how determination, strategic planning, and diverse interests can converge to forge a distinctive and dynamic career path.
